Canada entry overview
Canada has three main entry categories for visitors arriving by air: an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for visa-exempt nationals, a passport-only requirement for US citizens (and US lawful permanent residents with proof of status), and a visitor visa (TRV) for the rest. How to apply for a Canada eTA
The official portal is canada.ca/eta. Most applications are approved within minutes, though some take up to 72 hours. The eTA costs $7 CAD and is linked to your passport, valid for 5 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. You need a valid passport and a credit/debit card to apply — never use third-party sites that charge extra fees. Official portal: canada.ca/eta.
